Both received prize money amounting to €15,000. These finalists came out on top among 250 participating companies from 35 countries – all young companies that had submitted digital business solutions related to the transition to alternative energy sources. A special award went to the Berlin-based company carzapp and Codeatelier based in Burgstetten near Stuttgart, Germany. Both winners get access to mentoring services as well as the chance to showcase their business idea at the world’s largest auto show, the IAA in Frankfurt. From now until Saturday, they will be presenting their businesses on the 4,000 square meter area offered up by Hall 16 at CeBIT.

GFT Technologies, together with partners such as Ernst & Young and Deutsche Messe, started their search for “Smart Solutions for Global Challenges” in August of 2012. They were hoping to find fresh, innovative business solutions aimed at facilitating the global transition to alternative energies. 50 young companies from 13 countries made it to the final selection for the CODE_n Awards. In the end, one German and one Dutch company made it to the top: and GREENCLOUDS, respectively. “We found selecting the winners was a very difficult task,” states Ulrich Dietz, CEO of GFT and initiator of CODE_n. “Many of the finalists caught our attention with their exceptional business models addressing the energy transition.”

Winner in the “Emerging Company” category: A green cloud solution

The Dutch participants from GREENCLOUDS adhere to the principle of “running the cloud together”. They have developed a technology platform that makes idle resources in data processing centers available to others. This makes it economical for companies to get their hands on cloud computing resources. But it also opens up an additional source of income since companies can then sell excess IT capacities when their own servers are not running to their full extent. This makes existing data centers more efficient and significantly reduces their carbon footprints.

Winner in the “Startup” category: A community of energy-minded people

The vision of is reflected in their name: This company from Berlin wants to change things – our awareness, our use of energy resources. The startup’s light, portable solar modules allow everyone to generate their own energy and use this to charge their smartphone or tablet computer. In doing so, the devices measure the amount of CO2 that has been saved. The corresponding data is transferred to an online community, and the user earns credits for every gram of CO2 saved. Users can then exchange these “Changers Credits” for sustainable products and services.

Special CODE_n prize: Continental takes two startups to the IAA show

Two additional prizes were presented at the award show. Both were sponsored by the international automotive supplier, Continental – the newest partner to CODE_n. carzapp from Berlin and Codeatelier from Burgstetten, Germany (near Stuttgart) get the chance to share a show booth with Continental at the international automobile show IAA in Frankfurt. In addition, both winners have access to mentoring services provided by experienced innovators from this DAX-30 company.

carzapp operates a private carsharing platform through which anyone can make their car available for rental. A special hardware kit allows drivers to unlock the car with their smartphone when renting the car. Codeatelier has developed Homee, an affordable, easy-to-use smart home solution that allows users to control a variety of devices in their home through an intelligent app. This is not only convenient, but also saves energy.

“CODE_n is a unique platform designed to support startups,” states Ralf Lenninger, Director of Innovation and Strategy in the Interior Division at Continental. “The two young companies that we have selected really won us over with their compelling ideas.” The automotive supplier knows about the importance of supporting young companies based in Germany, and hopes to promote this initiative directly through CODE_n.
